While a commonly observed dominant midwater hydromedusa in Arctic surveys, the trachymedusa <em>Sminthea arctica <\/em>(Hartlaub, 1909) is currently listed as a <em>taxon inquirendum<\/em> in the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS). This is problematic, as the uncertain status of the species precludes it from being included in diversity assessments using WoRMS as the taxonomic backbone. This project will review the validity of the species <em>Sminthea arctica<\/em>, with the goal of resolving its status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This MSc project includes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>taxonomic detective work on genus <em>Sminthea<\/em> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>learning techniques in the DNA lab (DNA barcoding) and  the morphology lab (identification and taxonomy)\u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Phylogenetic and molecular species delimitation analysis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>opportunitites to participate in field work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>presenting in academic events and potentially being part of&nbsp;\u200ba peer-reviewed publication<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>inclusion in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www4.uib.no\/en\/research\/research-groups\/manet-team-cnidaria-and-ctenophora-research\">Manet Team<\/a> research group \ud83e\udebc<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-paragraph\">Contact <a href=\"https:\/\/www4.uib.no\/en\/find-employees\/aino.hosia\">Aino Hosia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www4.uib.no\/en\/find-employees\/luis.martell\">Luis Martell<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www4.uib.no\/en\/find-employees\/joan-j.soto-angel\">Joan J.
